The Ultimate AW Capsule Wardrobe Checklist

The season has officially changed and there's definitely a chill in the air, which can only mean one thing...a wardrobe reset! But at a time where we're all trying to be a little more mindful of our money, stress levels and the environment, splashing out on a whole load of new stuff just isn't practical...but a capsule wardrobe is. Not only does it save money, time and decision-making in the long run, but it's also far more sustainable and you're more likely to get wear out of what you buy - you might even already own some of it too!

Below I've listed, and advised on, the most useful, practical and versatile pieces to have in your wardrobe, not just this Autumn/Winter but every single year. I've tried to steer clear of trend based styles or pieces, #1 because they're not everyone's cup of tea and #2 they don't last. But, that's not to say you can't go and purchase a trend based version of any of the items below...as always, it depends entirely on your personality and what makes you feel good.

So without further ado, here's what should be in your Capsule Wardrobe this AW:

OUTERWEAR

Casual Jacket

This can be denim, leather, suede, whichever fabric you prefer, but it should also fall at the narrowest part of your torso if you really want it to show of your shape in its best light.

Trench Coat

Probably THE most timeless coat of all time. Flattering for every body shape. Choose a colour and cut that nods to your individual personality and that matches the colours of the rest of your wardrobe.

Smart Coat

The smart coat can be easily dressed up or down which makes it so necessary in any capsule wardrobe. Go for a mid-length style and wear it over jeans and trainers or even a midi dress and boots.

Puffer Coat

These, for me, are like the trainers of outerwear, comfortable, practical but also stylish...so basically, perfect. A midi length puffer works for every shape and a shorter puffer works on anyone who isn't conscious of a bigger boobage region.

BOTTOMS

Jeans

Go for whatever cut of jean that flatters your body shape best and choose a colour that best matches your style and personality - blue and black are the most popular and versatile colours.

Smart Trousers

Again, the shape and cut of the trousers will heavily depend on your personal style and your body shape. Wide leg trousers tend to work on every body shape and high-waisted are perfect if your waist is the narrowest part of your torso, if not, go for a mid-waist.

Midi or Mini Skirt

A skirt is a lovely alternative to jeans and trousers when you fancy a bit of a change. Choose the length depending on your personal preferences and then feel free to show some of your personality in the colour, fabric and/or print.

TOPS

Plain Tees

Boring, but SO necessary. They go with every single bottom piece, outerwear option, accessory etc., can be layered and will give you THE most amount of outfit options. Personally, I would opt for a black, white and off-white/cream/beige (if you have a warm undertone to your skin) OR grey (if your undertone is cool). Also, they're transeasonal, so my advice would be to actually invest in these because they're going to see you through the whole year.

White Shirt

The smart-casual must-have for the tops. It can easily be dressed up or down and can be worn open or closed. It's just an absolute vibe. Right now a slightly oversized fit will keep your look current and fresh.

Thin Knits

For when it's too cold for a t-shirt, but too warm for a thick jumper.

Jumper

The perfect place for you to bring in some of your personality with different colours and/or patterns. My only caveat would be for my fellow booby girls, stripes, cable knits and anything super thick can add inches to the bust, so try before you buy and if you're unsure, stick to a thin knit.

DRESSES

Knitted Midi

Comfortable, cosy and only one piece. If you want a knitted dress with shape you can opt for a fitted or ribbed style or go for something with a belt, alternatively, you can always add your own belt. If neither or those float your boat, wear a flattering jacket or necklace to break the outfit up.

Mini/Midi Dress

When you're choosing your other dresses for the season, go for something that will look good with tights, your AW shoe collection and at least two of your outerwear options. Bonus points if it can be layered with a jumper.

SHOES

White Trainers

White works with everything which is why I always advise my clients to go with this hue before any other when building their trainer collection. White trainers can dress any outfit down, they're comfortable, practical AND stylish.

Loafers/Flats

For a smart casual look, a nice pair of loafers or flats can do just the trick. Go for a colour that matches the overall palette of your wardrobe and a style that matches your personality.

Long Boots

Long boots aren't everyone's cup of tea, which is absolutely fine, but if you're a girl who goes for midi dresses and skirts in the AW, they will change the game for you (whilst elongating your legs and keeping them warm). P.S. Use discount code 'SC' to get a cheeky 10% off these boots.

Ankle/Biker Boots

Ankle boots are a firm favourite, especially with jeans, however, those of us that are curvier on the bottom half need to be super careful with the height of the boot. Too short or long will create an awkward break in the outfit, so definitely try before you buy.

Heels

They're not popular, but sometimes they are needed. My advice when buying heels is go for something that actually feels comfortable, and I don't just mean the cushioning inside. Go for a heel height that is comfortable to walk in, a heel shape that feels secure when you're walking and a style that makes you feel like a powerful woman.

ACCESSORIES

Please don't forget to accessorise. This is often part of the outfit that is seen as too much fuss and faff but I promise it will only take you an extra 60secs to completely elevate your outfit and make it your own...if you follow what I suggest below.

Everyday Handbag

Go for a colour that matches most of your shoes, usually a black or brown (or both!). This way, it will work across the board with all of your outfits. I personally love a crossbody bag, because it's super practical during the day, but if you tuck the straps in (or remove them if they're removable), you've got yourself a clutch ready for the evening.

2x Jewellery Pieces

You don't need a limitless supply of necklaces, rings, bracelets etc to make your outfit pop, you just need 2 of each that you can easily choose between in the morning, one simpler and one with more about it.

Belt

Regardless of whether your bottoms fit you well or not, everybody needs a belt in their wardrobe to draw lines and cut your outfit where you want it to. Once again, for the strap go with a colour that matches most of your shoes/bags and for the buckle choose the colour that goes with most of your jewellery.

And that's it!

I hope that has given you some clarity on what to put on your shopping list this season and some relief knowing that some items you already have in your wardrobe.
